Creativity Needed to Bring Students to Breakfast

Having worked in school districts and in my position as a school foodservice consultant, I know school districts are constantly looking for creative ways to feed students on a daily basis.

Several of my clients have found some level of success by offering breakfast in the classroom. Serving breakfast in classrooms is an alternative way of getting students to eat breakfast without having to deal with the traditional lunch line.

Osceola County in Central Florida found that putting on a breakfast expo proved to bring in all of their key stakeholders. Participants included schools not taking part in the breakfast program, assistant superintendants, PTA representatives, the Dairy Council of Florida, school managers, and more.

They were shown several breakfast service options like carts and actual school desks with bagged breakfasts. They used teddy bears as students seated in the desks for the presentation. The foodservice director and others in the audience showed the positive aspects of the program and how it can help students achieve academic success.

The foodservice catering team presented omelet stations set up with fresh fruits and beverages so the participants could start their day off right. It was a great presentation and a wonderful way to communicate the advantages of incorporating breakfast in the classroom to reach more students.

If you are experiencing any ‘breakfast in the classroom’ challenges, why not try putting on a breakfast expo to entice the district to take part in your initiatives and programs. We need to reach the broadest audience possible to encourage participation in the nutritional programs as well as the students who benefit from them.
