Minnesota School District Shows Progress in Meeting Nutritional Standards

I recently read a post on the smartschoollunch.com blog page submitted by the Owatonna , Minnesota School District in relation to the recent USDA Nutritional Regulations.

Since the law was enacted in 2010, their district has been working on menus that will support the new guidelines for any food served at the school before, during or after classes.

They feel there will be a minimal impact or change that the students will see, with the main change being a full serving of fruits or vegetables being required with the meal.

What changes have you seen in meeting the new requirements for nutrition set by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010?

If you’ve implemented the necessary changes, how has it impacted the students and your bottom line? Are you implementing creative ways to entice students to eat in the school cafeteria? Have the changes shown any shift in what students eat for breakfast and lunch?

There are a lot of things to consider when making the necessary adjustments to meet the school foodservice nutritional guidelines. Many of the districts I work with have embraced student involvement in making menu changes and offering new menu items that bring students into the cafeteria looking for meals that are not only nutritious, but presented and served the way they like it; making it more likely they’ll eat it rather than dispose of it.
